Ardie’s dad, Art Davis, could tell a story with a straight face, a sparkle in his eye, and such perfect timing that you’d believe it even if you knew it was a joke. Some of his stories were true, like this one, about a swimming hole, a bull, and a hickory stick.

During Art’s childhood, his mother, Nora, was kind and loving, but she had her rules, and there was a price to pay at the end of a hickory stick if you broke a rule. One of those rules was no swimming without adult supervision.

It was a hot summer day in the Missouri Ozarks. No adults were handy. Art couldn’t resist. He went swimming. Noting his absence from the cabin, Nora caught on. Art had started to cool off and enjoy the swim when he saw Nora tromping through the woods with a scowl on her face. Naked, with pants in hand and running like a rabbit, he took a shortcut home, hoping Nora hadn’t seen him. The shortcut would have worked if the bull in Farmer Pieland’s pasture hadn’t seen him. Art ran fast. The bull ran faster. Had it not been for the hedge apple tree in the pasture, Art wouldn’t have lived to tell the story.

Nora had no fear. She marched right up to that tree, hickory stick in hand, and said, “Art Davis, you get yourself down here right this minute.” He didn’t know what hurt most—his pride or the stings from the hickory stick on the way home. There are bulls you avoid, and there are bulls you eat.
